As a photographer, having a skilled and reliable assistant by your side can make all the difference in your workflow and final product. Whether you are shooting weddings, portraits, or commercial projects, an assistant photographer can help you capture more angles, manage equipment, and relieve some of the stress and workload of a shoot.
I have worked as both the first shooter and assitant shooter on many occasions, and I can safely say that having that extra pair of eyes and hands can end up being pricelss in a range of circumstances, especially during the wedding ceremony when you only have one change to get the first kiss!
In this blog post, I will share tips and tricks on how to work effectively with assistant photographers.
• Clearly Define Roles and Responsibilities: Before the shoot, make sure to have a clear understanding of the tasks and responsibilities assigned to each person. This will prevent confusion, overlap, or missed opportunities on the day of the shoot. Assign specific tasks to your assistant, such as managing lighting, holding reflectors, or assisting with composition.
• Open Communication: Maintaining clear and open communication is essential for a successful collaboration. Encourage your assistant to share their ideas, suggestions, or concerns throughout the shoot. This can lead to new perspectives, creative solutions, and a more efficient workflow.
• Provide Feedback and Training: Your assistant photographer is there to learn and grow, and providing feedback and training opportunities can help them improve and become a more valuable asset to your team. Offer constructive criticism and advice on areas they can improve, as well as praise for their successes.
• Utilise their Skills and Talents: Every assistant photographer has unique skills and talents that can add value to your shoots. Take the time to get to know your assistant and understand their strengths and weaknesses. Utilize their skills and talents to create a more well-rounded and effective team.I
